Plans to revamp the area ‘Poplar’ with first-time buyers in E14

Find out more

With some 3,000 new homes in E14 in the pipeline at Poplar, this historically poor area is about to get a makeover. Our E14 estate agents in our Canary Wharf branch are very interested to see what will happen when a diamond is chiselled from the rough.

Poplar’s regeneration plan brings New Homes Developments to E14

Poplar is only a stone’s throw from Canary Wharf and is an ideal spot for those priced out of that area. The area has had a regeneration plan in place for the last number of years. It has been based around Chrisp Street and the imminent revamping of Bartlett Park. Old council estates and flats are going to give way to lower rise dwellings and housing estates that are better planned for access to amenities and transport facilities.

With a new park, two new schools, riverside walks and 3000 new homes, Poplar will live up to it’s name.

While the area does not have the shopping, bars or fine dining of Canary Wharf, the plans for the future include 3,000 affordable new homes for E14. The modernised Chrisp Street Market will also provide a nucleus of activity with housing, a market square, shops and a cinema.

History

The history of the area goes back to the Industrial revolution and it’s provision of homes for dockland workers. The opening of West India docks in 1802 brought huge housing growth.  The area then filled with rows of rented cottages for workers and their families. Overcrowding became a problem and poverty was rife. The district has consisted mainly of public housing until recently but this is about to change. ”Call the midwife country” evolves and now shows it’s stamina and grit in an effort to change with the times.

Affordable New Homes in Poplar make suitable long-term investments for first-time buyers

Leven Wharf is a waterside scheme being built in Leven Road. It is beside the river Lea and on the site of a long since gone metal works. There will be space for 160 homes along with offices and shops, including one bedroom flats from £340,000. Also available in Poplar are some conversions and for as little as £275,000 you could buy a one bedroom flat. With the Help-to-Buy scheme these prices are very affordable for first timers.

When buying you are making a long term investment. Our advice would be not to be put off by the look of the area or it’s amenities at present. It is in a superb location and when you wait it out it really will be a spectacular place to live.
