Making E14 home – Why the Isle of Dogs is a great place to live

Find out more

It hasn’t always been known as the Isle of Dogs but to many people it is now a great place to call home. Our Canary Wharf estate agents look at why this area of E14 is a great place to live.

A unique location to live in East London

The Isle of Dogs – or “The Island” as it is called by locals –  is located down the river Thames from London City. It is boxed in on three sides by the lazy meandering of the river Thames and there are only two roads in and two roads out. Do not be fooled however as this area is anything but sleepy.  It is very much alive and kicking, with the busy financial district of Canary Wharf sitting on it’s northern boundary and one of the largest inner-city farms in Europe to the south.

Changing Times

High rise apartments, waterside developments and even alpacas! The Isle of Dogs has something for everyone.

The Isle of Dogs was given it’s name in the 1500’s and was mostly marshland until the 17th century. In the 1800’s it’s history as a vital trade centre was made when West India docks was constructed. This was a very important time for trade in Britain and the area became a very successful docklands. East India docks and Millwall docks followed making the area extremely busy. Workers lived and worked in the area right up until the late 1970’s and the last dock closed in 1980 as they became obsolete. But in more recent times the area has sprung alive again and the old feel is back with a new look and a new skyline.

A range of properties are on offer in E14

Property on offer now is varied with some warehouse conversions, some low-rise riverside schemes and even older estates still available. For those looking for something high rise or new there are some fantastic new developments up and coming in E14 with Wardian, Harbour Central and South Quay Plaza to name but a few.

Family Life in East London

With DLR and the extended Jubilee line on the doorstep this location is great for commuters. It is an area that is not just good for young singletons or couples however. Money has been pumped into schooling in the area. There is also Mudchute Farm, a beautiful park, and great community spirit. It has now evolved into a place that more and more families are calling home.
