Fish Island is in the Bow district, not far from it’s neighbour, Hackney Wick. It has a name to remember and is not even an island. While Hackney Wick may be better known, Fish Island is sure to be a very interesting place to live with it’s rich history of industry and art. We feel it will soon be on the tip of many people’s tongues.
Originally just known as ‘The Island’, it was a 30 acre site developed to become a factory town with some small factories and workers houses filling it’s space. It was eventually named ‘Fish Island’ due to the fishy names given to each street. It was however badly bombed in the Second World War and when it was rebuilt, those workers houses were replaced by warehouses. From money printing to peanuts, eventually it was literally a waste disposal hub.
A Home For Art
Fish Island became home to many artists after industry deserted the island. By the 1990’s warehouse spaces were flooded with artists as they availed of cheap rents for studio spaces. Where artists gather, so to does culture and opportunity. Galleries, coffee shops, eateries and even a brewery cast their anchor on the island. Although most artists were priced out of the area a scheme was set up to protect some space for them. And so it remains.
What Now?
Developers are hoping to deliver thousands of homes to this area over the next decade. Redevelopment is full steam ahead. Furthermore, an appreciation of the industrial and creative history of the area has been considered while planning it’s future. So if you like the idea of a browse through a gallery and a coffee with friends. If you fancy a sip of locally brewed beer or some street food and music. Fish Island is simply the location for you. Whoever said Shoreditch, was wrong. Fish Island really is a place apart.
