Why not move to a regeneration area which is also looking at the best interests of its residents and your environmental future? Our Canary Wharf estate agents look at how the area was awarded the world’s first Plastic Free Communities-approved commercial centre.

Investing in a plastic free community

In this time of climate change and environmental awareness we have seen shocking photographs, headlines and advertisement campaigns referencing our overuse of plastics. Canary Wharf has not just been watching in horror; there is now a huge eco-drive in place in this part of London.

Canary Wharf is the world’s first Plastic Free Communities-approved commercial centre

Canary Wharf Group has become the world’s first commercial centre to be awarded Plastic Free Communities-approved status by Surfers Against Sewage, a marine conservation charity. This follows the “Breaking the Plastic Habit” campaign against plastic bottles and straws in the area. The docks have been sifted of rubbish and coffee grounds are being collected from cafes. They are then compacted into logs to be used as fuel. This financial district is determined in its efforts to go green.

Local business leads the way

Driverless electric cars are among many plans to cut traffic and keep Canary Wharf green.

Head of sustainability at Canary Wharf Group, Martin Gettings is in charge of the environmental side of the district. He has been working especially with local business groups over the last few years. Local enterprises can now lead the way when it comes to environmental issues in the area. As a result, they have been urged to be more aware of the cause.

To date roughly 1.2 million plastic items have been eradicated from use. There has even been a refundable deposit scheme on plastic bottles where people who deposit bottles into the recycling machine get shop credit for their efforts. Furthermore, the river has a filter system in place which holds onto debris and rubbish, stopping it from entering the ocean.

New homes at Wood Wharf

Buying property in Canary Wharf now has all of the above benefits attached. Over the next few years there will be a further 3,600 homes built on a 23 acre site. Wood Wharf is a mixed development. It will have shops, restaurants and its own school. Clearly, it is a development worth investigating.
